I don't know how many of you guys are into the Twilight series but I absolutely adore it...it's one of the most entertaining books I've ever read. I mean, it's not exactly a classic love story or the most well written book but you can't help just getting absorbed into the world created by Stephenie Meyer. I read the entire series in 3 and a-half days!!! Anyways, after watching the movie, which wasn't nearly as good as the book, I got to thinking; if a Hong Kong version would be made, who would fit to star in it?
This idea got a little carried away and I started casting HK stars as potential Twilight characters. I thought it would be fun to share it with you guys since I haven't been here for so long! But before I start sharing my casting, I thought I’d give a little background on what the story is about to those who don’t know Twilight.
Twilight is a love story with a tinge of horror and suspense. It revolves around the story of two star-crossed lovers and their journey to eternal happiness. The story is told from the point of view of Bella Swan, the female protagonist, who moves from sunny and dry Phoenix, Arizona to dark and damp Forks, Washington. It was there that her story began…she falls in love with a vampire named Edward Cullen (sigh*).
Edward is part of a family, a coven, consisting of six other vampires. They live amongst the humans, doing their best to blend in. Carlisle and Esme play the part of the parents with four adopted children since they’re too young, or appear to be, to have teenage children. Besides Edward, the other “adopted” children of Carlisle and Esme are Emmett, Jasper, Rosalie, and Alice, each with their own unique and special quality. The difference between the Cullens and other vampires is the fact that they are “vegetarians,” meaning they only consume the blood of animals and abstain from consuming human blood.
I think the love story between Edward and Bella is very touching and therefore I really recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a love story with lots of action…even some blood and gore =P.
With that in mind, this is the cast I came up with:
Bella Swan: Naturally, the first person I thought about to play the female protagonist would be none other than the one and only Michelle Ye. In the novel, Bella thinks of herself as just an ordinary girl, a plain-Jane, and she doesn’t know that she is truly a captivating and natural beauty. Don’t you think that just screams Michelle? There’s no denying that Michelle is gorgeous, but her beauty isn’t loud or offensive. Contrarily, her beauty is very refined and elegant. Like I said before, you wouldn’t notice how gorgeous she is the first time you look at her…she’s the type of girl that the longer you look, the more beautiful she becomes and for that, I think she totally fits to play Bella. Bella’s personality is also very selfless, gentle yet feisty…I think that really fits into the description of many characters Michelle have played in the past. Also, Bella is very independent and intelligent, something that Michelle definitely reflects. And I think it’s weird how Bella’s family situation is, in some ways, very similar to Michelle. She’s perfect for this role!
Edward Cullen: Let’s see, which actor (besides hottie Robert Pattinson) fits the description of being impossibly beautiful, godlike, and just plain perfect? The book describes him as looking like a male model/ Greek God with a defined, chiseled face, and marble skin. Well, the first person that came to my mind was Taiwanese hunk Takeshi Kaneshiro. Although he looks incredibly young for his age, I don’t know if he can pass for a teenager (who’s actually 108 years old), so another person came to mind. I don’t know why but I think HK heartthrob Ron Ng would be a good candidate to play the vampire heartthrob that Bella is so in love with. Being a die-hard RM fan, I would’ve loved to cast Raymond Lam as the HK Edward Cullen but I don’t think he fits the part of playing a deadly vampire. I think Ron has a sexy-smoldering look with a hint of enigma, which is perfect for the part. Of course everyone has their own version of Edward Cullen (including me), so I will leave this character open for suggestions to those who have read the book.
Jacob Black: The loveable werewolf and third-wheel of the Edward-Bella relationship. This was also a very hard character for me to cast but after some thinking, I decided Raymond Lam would be best suited for this role. Jacob is describe as tanned and well, big and I know Ray isn’t that big but he definitely is tanned and he looked burly enough in Eternal Happiness so I was like why not? Jacob does get to spend some time with Bella and this character is just so darnn lovable in additional to being strong, protective, and a good friend, I think Raymond would be perfect to play Jacob aka Edward’s rival in so many ways. Seeing Ron and Raymond duke it out would be kind of fun right? I would love to cast Ray as Edward since Michelle is playing Bella but honestly, I don’t see it…but I do see him as Jacob and there’s nothing wrong with that except that he doesn’t really get the girl at the end…or does he?
Carlisle Cullen: More handsome than any movie star, wise, compassionate, and strong…who else to better play this character than Kevin Cheng? If it was up to me, I would cast Kevin as Edward (at least my own Edward anyways =P), but he’s a little too mature to be playing that part of a 17 (supposedly) year old. Carlisle is the father figure of the Cullen’s, his physical age is 23 when in reality, he is more than 300 years old. I think Kevin could most certainly pull off 23 and I know Kevin doesn’t look old enough to play Ron’s father but Carlisle is supposed to look young…young enough not to have teenage children. I also think Kevin also has the gentle but manly look, very paternal, just like the character Carlisle. I think this character is the key to many crucial details in the story and that’s why I chosen Kevin to play this part…no one can deny his presence, good looks, or charm. Who else but Kevin Cheng to play the part of a handsome doctor?
Esme Cullen: Gigi Lai[/u]. I love this character since she is so sweet, gentle and loving, something Gigi definitely fits to portray. I think Gigi is one of the most gorgeous actresses in Hong Kong and Esme is also a very beautiful character. In the book, Esme is described as having a heart-shaped face with dimples and a slender body that is also round and soft…I think Gigi Lai fits that description perfectly! And I also think her and Kevin make the cutest couple, just like Emse and Carlisle. Esme’s physical age is 26 and Gigi definitely looks that young!
Alice Cullen: I think Alice is one of my most favorite characters in the book. She is described as very petite, pixy-like, graceful, stylish, have dark, spiky hair, and possess the ability to see the future. She is Bella’s best friend and loves to do all the crazy girly stuff, like slumber parties and shopping. I think Leila Tong would be absolutely perfect for this role, appearance wise! Alice is also said to be very bubbly and loving, something Leila can definitely pull off.
Jasper Hale: If Leila is playing Alice, I think Bosco Wong should play Jasper since he is Alice’s husband. Not only because I think they are cute together but Jasper is described as tall, lean but muscular, and very charismatic, which is all very Bosco. Jasper holds the ability to manipulate the emotions of those around him and I think that’s so cool! I guess Bosco as Jasper would be so right!
Rosalie Hale: The “most beautiful woman in the world” who is tall, statuesque, elegant, and classy. Although I don’t think Bernice Liu is the most beautiful girl in the world or even in the HK entertainment industry, I think she is still totally gorgeous. Her beauty is very obvious and she can totally pull off the vain, self-centered girl, which is Rosalie. Unlike Alice, Rosalie took her time to warm up to Bella but in the end, she does help Bella out a lot and I think their friendship is quite meaningful. Bernice should definitely play Rosalie!
Emmett Cullen: This wasn’t an easy character to cast since I love Emmett so much and he is described as burly, muscular, intimidating, yet have an innate innocence. I wasn’t sure any HK actors possess those traits but I think one comes pretty close…Kenneth Ma. He’s super tall, pretty burly, and I think he has that underlying innocence that would enable him to portray Emmett. Plus, Emmett is Rosalie’s husband and Bernice and Kenneth are pretty compatible.
Jessica Stanley: This petty and annoying character is Bella’s “frenemy” and I think no one fits this role better than Myolie Wu. Enough said =P
There are many other characters that I thought about casting but it would a little long to post a description about them. For a complete profile of the actual characters, you guys can just read up on it at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Twilight_characters
I came up with this not only because the Hollywood cast was a little un-satisfying (all except hottie Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, and the other male vampire characters), but I also saw a poster for a Filipino version of Twilight. I mean if there's a Filipino version, why not make a HK version LOL? And the book is translated into 37 different languages so I don't think the idea is too farfetched. Lets petition for a HK Twilight JK! LOL and to those who don't know what in the world I'm talking about, just type in "Twilight Series" in wikipedia and you'll get the idea...but it's best if you read it since it's just that good!
I guess my reflection turned out more like a mini fanfiction...hope I didn't put you guys to sleep but I've been dying to share this with someone!
