Chapter 2
From TVB to Media Asia (Rich and Famous)
To date, my entire life has 3 significant turn around. The first was when I migrated to US at 11 years old, second was when I was won the MCI title at 18 years old, and third was when I was 24 years old, participating in the Hong Kong, China and Taiwan collaboration, acting in World’s Finest. The most interesting part is that, in these three happenings, from the beginning, progressing right up to the end – none was of my own will to participate. However, they all significantly changed my world. To migrate to US was my father’s arrangement – I was left with no choice back then, but till today I am very grateful for his decision for he has allowed me to receive western education. This has lead me to deeply understanding the excellence of having Chinese education as my basic, western education as my practice. As for winning the MCI title, it was also not my decision. To be chosen or not, definitely depends on the decision of judges. I’ve never expected this to lead me into the entertainment circle, and then developing into my lifetime career. The third happening is even more miraculous. Before it, I had always thought I will be with TV station, and giving my service till old age and deathbed, who ever knew, that one World’s Finest has brought me into the dream job of movie world.
In this happening, there is an extremely crucial person, so crucial that she herself probably has no idea that her decision has entirely changed the fate of another – Jessica Hsuan. I have ever collaborated with her in Golden Faith, as a pair of sisters. Back then, I was still a young girl who knows nothing, and was full of respect and admiration for this TVB’s big sister. I clearly remember once while shooting outer scene, we were both sitting outside a bread van, she told me that: “Remember, whatever happens in future, you definitely can’t leave TVB, it is a big tree that can protect you. This is from my experience, now I give it to you.” Both of us will never expect that her being not able to make it to the shooting of World’s Finest one week beforehand has created the reason for me to leave the shade of TVB big tree. It was also because of the strong recommendations from Ms Lok Yii Ling, Mr Ho Ding Diu and Mr Chan Fai Kong that a little fameless girl like me can take the female lead role of Jessica Hsuan in World’s Finest. Maybe this was all within fate’s arrangement that it was then I got to know World’s Finest chief director, Wong Jing.
I was extremely nervous and excited to be the female lead among the strong China, Hong Kong, Taiwan casts of Li Ya Peng, Damien Lau, Wallace Huo, Tammy Chen. The ‘Hai Tang’ I played in the series, not only needs to be extremely good-looking in her male suits, but also needs to be extremely romantic with Wallace and Ya Peng, as well as funny and comical with Roger Kwok. One character that needs so much happiness, sadness, comedy, and still needs the finest martial arts, it is definitely very challenging for me. Thus with my dislocated foot injury from Lost in the Chamber of Love, I gradually started my filming mission. A month later, one afternoon, I was standing behind the door of the changing room, trying out the new costume for filming. When I turned around, I saw Director Wong walking towards me, saying to me in a very serious tone: “I have something to discuss with you.”, giving me a big fright. I was thinking that I was doomed, there must be some problems about my performance. I wanted to hide away but it was impossible, thus I thickened my face and replied: “I have been filming since 5 this morning, I’m very sleepy now, can I have a nap before we discuss?” Director said: “Then, what time do you want to sleep until?” I said, “5 o’clock.” “Okay, I will look for you at five,” he said.
Now that I recall, I’m really someone who bothers not much, because I really slept like a log until 5, until when the director knocked, I awoke with a start. I was so nervous I couldn’t keep still. Before this, my conversation with Director Wong was no more than 10 words, thus after inviting him to have a seat, I was jumpy all the while, awaiting his critics. No one will ever guess that Wong Jing’s words later changed my world for once and for all, because he not only offered me a contract to enter Rich and Famous, but also gave me a key to a wider world. I have also never thought that Director Wong has been paying attention to me since my first debut in Street Fighters, observing my changes over the years and when he reckoned the most appropriate time, he offered me this chance. Thus, it is clear that an individual’s every move is noticed all the while. Later, another discussion with Director Wong and Rich and Famous boss, Mr Lam, it was enough to see their sincerity. Just as I was deciding to stay or to leave, another incident occurred, that allowed our cooperation. I was in Athens shooting a vacation promotion, but was unlucky enough to be robbed of my entire possession with me. Just as I was having not a single cent and being totally helpless, Rich and Famous helped me settled everything urgent. Their constant care and concern let people feels warmth, thus allowing the cooperation later.
The problem is, even I don’t understand why I cried when I bid farewell to Ms Lok Yu Ling and Mr. Chan Fai Kong. Later, I understood that it is like a bride, even though she may have found a good family in law to marry to, she will still be reluctant to her own home, especially one like TVB. It is like a university, teaching me every skill to survive in this society and helped me to identify the road I wish to take in future. I will be like those seniors and juniors, whenever talking about TVB as my root school, it will be my pride, and will forever remember the beautiful moments of school times.
