The AdventureThis 2010 birthday celebration for our small overseas ‘troop’ of fans started as early as 27th Dec. The two Vietnamese fans, Hai Yen and Gia flew to Malaysia to meet up with me. Since we do not have winter here, I bought my winter attire that very day as I was busy working the weeks before. And the next day, we flew to Hangzhou, Kim from the States join us on 29th, and then we began our little adventure in China. I do not really go into lengths to elaborate the series of mishaps we had here since I don’t think anyone is interested in the details of our misfortunes, but just for a rough idea and a summary, it included me missing the two Vietnamese at the Malaysia airport, the Viets and I getting down the wrong station to fetch Kim (she was flying Shanghai and was suppose to take a train to meet us in Hangzhou), in the rush of catching the next bus, I was pick-pocketed but did not realize a thing until the bus driver reminded us to be more careful, Kim missing her train with no one speaking English at all to help her buy the next train ticket, it was freezing cold, the Hangzhou East Train Station had no whatsoever public transport at those wee hours, so we reluctantly crammed in an illegal van with about 20 people (one of them had salted fish!!!), I was busy texting her the Chinese phrases for her to show people around her (which I later got to know she never received even), night was getting colder by the time (we were outdoors waiting for Kim), the Viets were wearing too little, it was so cold we had to hide in a toilet to warm ourselves! OMG, how sad is that? Thank god, somehow, Kim finally managed to buy her train ticket and took a taxi which abandoned her off at some unknown streets as our accommodation place was not too easy to locate, with her luggage and what not, she called me for help, I was anxious enough waiting for her arrival at our place, upon answering her helpless phone call, I was like, gosh, I’ve had enough, I just wished everyone is back home safe and sound, that’s all I wanted that point of time. Kim trying frantically to get someone on the street to speak to me on the phone to tell me where she was abandoned at, but as she was not speaking Chinese, most people avoided her, it was only until she turned her phone to speaker mode where I can speak directly to the passer-bys, when we finally found each other, I was so happy I think I could cry, and mind you I don’t usually cry! Then it was me nearly getting run over all the times I cross the road, us taking the wrong bus to the wrong side of the city, us getting lost countless times but were too proud to ask for directions, in short, it was quite a nightmare, especially for me, since I was, like how they like to call me, their guardian for this trip. Had anything happened to them, I think I’d be in guilt for the rest of my life… Anyway, it was a rather interesting adventure I think, and we’ve had our share of fun, frights, shocks and what not, then the big day finally arrived. to be continued...

The DayThis part onwards, I will go into every detail to allow other fans who didn’t make it to the event ‘experience’ the event from my writings, it’s not too good a writing, but do add on your own imagination, it should be good enough then! The day begun as early as 4am, it was then when I saw San’s message which only came through at midnight, unfortunately, it was too late for them to pick us up anymore, so we still stuck to our original plan to find our way to the museum. I had told them that we would go directly to the bus instead of the gathering venue, since our bulky luggages were not exactly ergonomic to be paraded around streets. Luckily for us, the place was not too hard to find, and we were there in no time. Assuming the rest were still at the gathering venue some distance away from where we were, we waited obediently. However, after some time, I thought I should inform San that we’ve found the venue safely and will wait for them to get on our transport. My first worry was that it would be a small van, and our luggage will surely take up all the spaces! Little did we know, San was waiting for us all the while at the carpark in a big bus! What a relief! We had a brief welcoming hugging session with her before she headed off to pick up other fans. In the meantime, we went to buy breakfast since none of us has had any. By the time we returned to the bus, most of the fans were already there. The humongous cake had also just arrived and taken its place on the first two seats. I thought it was a very creative cake design. At this time too, one of the fans announced a ‘trip’ to the washroom and I immediately told others to go. We’ve actually had quite a search for toilets after buying breakfast, but were in total vain! We only found the ‘mobile toilets’ but never figured out how to enter it! It was quite weird too since it stated ‘Occupied’ at the side of the door (for all units) but on the above, it stated ‘Vacant’ instead! Anyway, thank god these people know their way better than us, and found us the more common used type of toilets. Along the way, we made acquaintances with a fan from Hong Kong, Anita. It was also quite a relief for Kim that she speaks English. Our journey soon started; there was nothing much to it. We stopped at Hangzhou to pick up some fans, they had unfortunately waited at another venue and thus had to take a cab to the right venue. While waiting, we all saw a very cute white puppy hopping about. Some time later, the fans arrived and we continued our journey. As our bus approached Hengdian with billboards showing Hengdian Movie Studio, fans began to get excited. We soon met up with the rest of the group who had arrived earlier. We had lunch some 100m away from the hotel where we checked in after. It was a very big lunch indeed, we had too much to eat! After lunch, to our surprise the restaurant staffs had somehow mopped their stairs, so it was very wet and slippery, Kim was telling me to be careful (since I’m always the klutz), when she suddenly slipped, OMG, I was so shocked. It was also then when she sprained her ankle a little. How unlucky! Still, it didn’t injure too much and she still managed to walk. The SiteAfter checking in the hotel, we set off to Gu Min Ju where Michelle was filming. Upon entering the place, I decided it was really a good trip, because not only we get to meet Michelle, we get to see a filming place too! It was really interesting and big too, with all the interesting ancient houses, all the scenic spots. So while waiting for Michelle, we took the opportunity to take photos all over the place, with golden cows too, which I thought was unique. And I was wondering why we have golden ox all over Hengdian, now that I think of it, I think it’s cause of the year of ox right? Hehe… Anyway, I guess we were getting quite restless after quite some while, because one of the crew came out at least three times to request us to be quiet, it was quite embarrassing and I felt quite bad that we’re actually interrupting Michelle at work. After a while, Michelle’s assistant, Hua, came out to let us know they allow only two fans in at one time. I immediately thought of Kim and Hai Yen, Kim because she came from across half a globe and Hai Yen mainly because she was such an avid fan. However, there was a problem since neither of them speaks Chinese, it would not be recommended, plus Kim was away to the washroom that time. San caught hold of me and Gia to send in, which was also a wrong decision since both of us speak Chinese, and shouldn’t be sent in at one time. San obviously realized this too and then decided to let Gia and Hai Yen enter together. The GlimpseAfter that, it was waiting again. Kim and I wandered around and carved wordings (of MYR website hehe) on the sandy field to kill time. Out of the blue, there was one point of time where everyone rushed to a corner, and needless to say, it was Michelle who came out to the washroom and greeted us briefly. Kim and I did not crowd her further. I was an advantage since I was taller and could still catch a glimpse of Michelle from outside the crowd. That was my first glimpse of her this trip. She looked very pale and tired to me. I should’ve have mention (but some of your probably know anyway), before this, I had seen Michelle once (if it was counted as ‘seen’), when she came to Malaysia, and Breadgirl and I went to see her. We did not actually get to meet her that time around, she briefly walked pass us, but it was also an unforgettable moment. I could recall it like yesterday. That time, I could barely recognize her, most probably due to her makeup and appearance that day, it was elaborately done for a banquet as elegant as such. I remember describing the first thought that struck me was that she’s a Barbie doll coming to life, since coincidentally she was wearing a pink dress and dyed her hair golden brownish. It was then too that I was awed at how thin she was, how beautiful she was, thank god I’m not a guy, or I would have drooled like mad I guess. Anyway, back to how Michelle looked to me this time. She looked pale and tired, might I mention, and perhaps due to less make up, she looks like how I recognize her from photos (except fairer / paler) more than the last time when I met her in Malaysia. She looks very grateful for our presence, yet helpless that she has to continue work, and sorry that we had to wait for her in the cold. True enough, a crew member soon ushered her inside. Reluctantly the crowd dispersed, but I think Michelle’s brief greeting with us brought much warmth and gave us more stamina to wait further. Not much to mention about the waiting, except I was sure the crew member came out to hush us few more times. It was already getting dark when the two Vietnamese finally came out. Hua called for 2 more fans to go in, and San was searching for us. Because we’re usually outside the crowd, it took us quite some time to present ourselves before her. This time around, we went in three together, Anita, Kim and I. It was really dark inside, and to tell you the truth, it is only then I got excited, not at the fact that I’m meeting Michelle, but at the fact that I’m going to watch her film, it is an entirely different situation altogether. I’ve always wanted to see how films are made, and now I’m walking right into a filming site, with my favorite idol filming. How cool is that? to be continued...

The MeetWe were tiptoeing very quietly and started holding our breath as we stepped up the plank stairs. Then, we arrived at a very chaotic upper floor, being such klutz, I was sweating away that I might just tripped one of the cables and ruin everything (I’ve had such embarrassing moment before back in high school!) and embarrass Michelle and all the fans down there. I had 1001 worries and anxiety swarming me, but as we entered a small room, Michelle who was sitting at her chair reading the script intently, caught our attention altogether. I told Kim to go ahead of me since I had no idea what to say to her at all. Haha, I just wanted to look at her quietly. I guess my tongue was tied! Michelle was very friendly, and greeted us happily. Luckily Anita was more talkative than us, so she said something to Michelle, which I couldn’t hear well. Michelle started off learning our names and where we came from. We started with Anita from Hong Kong, and upon hearing Kim from Washington, Michelle bulged her eyes and told Hua in Chinese (since she was speaking English to Kim) that this fan came all the way from States! Then of course I introduced myself too, Rain from Malaysia. At that, she seemed to have a bell ringing somewhere in her head, and I’ve heard this from another fan (from their last visit I forgot when) that she seemed to remember she has a fan named Rain in Malaysia. I forgot where she learnt about me, maybe from the overseas website or from the gifts and cards we sent her over the years. She was pointing at me and said “I know you, I’ve…” Stupid me interrupted her and said, “Yea, we’ve chatted online before.” (Which I really doubt is what she actually remembers me for!) Damn, now I will never know what or how exactly she remembers about me. But the mere fact she remembers me, I’m happy enough. There was an awkward silence for a while since none of us knew what to say, and perhaps she noticed that we were cold, she got a lady to get us hot packs. How thoughtful of her, and how happy we were! Of course we were never gonna use the hot packs, those are like golden souvenirs for us! She also treated us to a kind of sweet delicacy, if I’m not mistaken its green bean paste ‘cake’. She told us it’s very nice and that we should eat. Kim and I shared one, I think the fact she offered those made them twice if not triple as delicious as it initially is. Haha! Then Michelle went over our names and where we came from again to make sure she remembers us, how nice of her that she makes the effort! Then Anita did the talking again, then Michelle asked if Kim was Chinese, when Kim told her that she’s actually Vietnamese and only understands English, and she asked what language I speak, I told her I speak a little of Pu Tong Hua and lousy Cantonese and English and that I understood all three language. I think speaking to us was quite a weird experience since she had to speak to Anita in Cantonese and then Kim in English, I was a rather odd one, but she settled for English with me to reduce the numbers of language she had to use! Haha… Then, she had to film again, and she told the lady in white to bring us to watch her film from the monitor. When we arrived at the monitor room, the screen was zoomed in at her face, a sad face. However I notice her attire seemed to be different from what we saw her wear earlier on. Then the camera zoomed out and I realize there was another Michelle standing at the right side of the ‘Michelle’ I saw! Ahhh, I was like, there is two Michelle! Cool, the other ‘Michelle’ actually the sister who is going to escape from the wedding I guess. They made up her to look similar I guess, and the scene was about Xiu Mei comforting her sister who is wedding soon. In between breaks of the filming, Michelle made funny faces, and Sinchan faces, but once they started you can see how fast Michelle transformed into her character. I would love to watch a crying scene of hers, but I guess, I’m asking too much! The scene had three takes. First take was because the sound was not adjusted properly, it was too soft to hear anything they were saying. Second take, believe or not, in the midst of filming, someone’s Sony Ericson broke the silence of the filming! That was classic, imagine watching an ancient series with Sony Ericson official ringtone in the background! Haha, the guy was kicked out from the filming set immediately and the third take was perfect. Although we knew the scene was completed, we daren’t move from our spot until the lady came to us again and beckoned us towards Michelle’s room again! Hehe, the lady was very friendly looking and I worked up my nerve to ask for her name, she only laughed in my face and I was like, that’s weird! I thought perhaps I had asked in the wrong manner or a very funny phrase (as I think it was my first time getting to know a stranger in Chinese). Only did I know on my way back to Malaysia, it was Moon laughing her head off, since we chatted before but just never know how she looks like. She was probably having fun teasing me! Hmmph! What a mischievous lady! She claimed that she was saving me embarrassment…. If only she had told me then, I would have given her a tight hug, she was probably afraid I would suffocate her with my hug so she saved it to reveal later. Returning to the room, Michelle asked if we enjoyed what we saw, and how her performance was. “Amazing!” was what Kim gave her, funny how we could only think of one word when speaking to her, gosh, we’re like dumbos, but amazing is the right word cause it was simply breathtakingly amazing to watch her act (not to mention making Sinchan faces in between any breaks)! OMG, I duno why we just can’t speak more fluently when with her. Then Michelle had to change for the next scene, so Moon ushered us to the other room, but I still managed a last peek, OMG, taking off those ‘flappy’ clothes (of course not naked but with her tights inside), she looks so damn thin!!! After she changed, we entered her room again, she sat down picking photos sent to her for autographs. She rejected quite a number of them! Haha, there was one photo where Hua exclaimed that it was not Michelle, but Michelle said it was indeed her, it was her Zhou Xuan photo, fancy Hua not recognizing Michelle! Haha… It was fun to watch her go through all the photos, and picking them like a child picking her favorite toys. Just before she went in to film the next scene, she got Hua to get her some ‘food’, obviously junk from her ‘treasure box’. Hua conveniently threw her a packet of biscuit and she went, “This again?”, to which Hua replied, “There’s not much choice is there, you’ve been eating from this box for so many days, you’ve got to eat one of them ‘again’.” Haha, Michelle made a playful pout then asked for water. Then, she had to film again, and we went to the monitor room again. They were still getting the scene ready and Michelle of course took time to entertain us with her Sinchan face through the monitor. At this time, a security guard came up and told us we had to go since after 6, only filming crew is allowed inside. Reluctantly, and without even a chance to bid Michelle goodbye, we left to outside which had darken considerably! Everyone crowded us and asked us our experience, but I think we were still in a daze we couldn’t tell much, plus the guard was very earnest to shoo us out. The WishEveryone dispersed for dinner and were to come back for the sky lanterns session at 8:30pm. Since none of us were hungry, we walked towards the event venue to help out with the decorations and preparation. Here, I had the opportunity to get to know a few fans whom I’d know in the past, but never saw in person, like Tong (who helped overseas fans get autographs for the past few years), Lu Guo, Long Xia and Mao! I also had quite a nightmare pumping my worst phobia – balloons for the decorations, but for the sake of Michelle, we went all out! By the time we finished, we were in time to join others for the sky lanterns session. It was a very memorable experience for us since none of us had ever seen a real sky lantern, let alone actually put one into the sky before. We wrote our wishes for Michelle and I think it’s rather unique we have English and Vietnamese wishes on Chinese sky lanterns. It surely is a lifetime treasured memory for us. I worry nothing about Michelle, except her health, so I wished her the best of health and that she lives everyday happily without illness nor injuries! to be continued...

The PartyAfter the session, we took the bus back to the event’s venue, and waited for Michelle to come over. We signed the poster and were given seats just behind Michelle. Michelle arrived soon after, standing before us, speaking in a little dazed, a little shy yet very adorable manner. She was standing and clutching her dress like a kindergarten 5 years old girl (I even imagined her two ponytails), and swayed side to side, speaking just like a shy, shy child. Perhaps she was still quite overwhelmed from her whole day of work. This was not the Michelle we had known before, we had known her for her mischief, for playfulness, for her wits, haha, a shy one? It just shows that she’s as human as we are. Nevertheless, she was still the cute Michelle we all love. We started with our stretch of performances, with exceptionally well done videos by Mao and the rest. I really respect them. Michelle sat down and watched and began eating non-stop. Gradually, the vivacious Michelle we knew revealed herself before us. Sitting just behind her, we watch her every move, watched how she picked and tasted from every little platters laid before her like a child tasting snacks, watch how she picked only the top of the cake to eat, watched how she munched with much satisfaction on a simple plain banana. Then she sang her one and only song with Mao. Watched how she laughed like a mad woman at a particular video compiled of all her rumored boyfriends, and even requested it to be played again, watched how happily she laughed at the appearance of Louis Koo, watched her cute interactions with Xing Jiadong, watch how she hit him playfully on his arm whenever he teasingly ‘screamed’ with the fans at her rumored bfs. Speaking of which, at a particular time, a balloon on the wall decoration burst, she turned to blink at it like a cartoon and said in an adorable tone, “That must be XX missing me!” And at another time, when her phone rang, but she was not in time to pick it up, she went in a playful tone, “You’re all doomed, XX just called me and you made me miss picking up his call!” Then she called back whoever who called her, I finally got to see her legendary antique handphone, I’m surprised it’s even working! I really want to learn the story behind the handphone, there must be a story to why she still uses it to date (besides it being her first handphone), and to tell you the truth, anyone would envy the phone, to be able to have Michelle grasp it for so many years and to stick to her chin when she talks into it, what a lucky phone it is not to be thrown away by some other users who would surely go for a newer model of phone by now! After that it was probably the cake cutting time, again it was the time to crowd around her so I stayed behind and didn’t get any photos that time, she made a wish, I wonder what . After that we had a group photo session, and it was the time for fans to give her their gifts, basically we were at our seats most of the time since there was more than enough crowd around her, I was sure she’d be knocked down anytime, so I’m not sure what exactly others gave her, but I knew there were some quite impressive gifts, including a very cute Mang Lai Kuan cross-stitched cushion for her. I only knew after I saw the photo! Had I known earlier, I’d requested for a photo with the pillow, it’s so cute, again, salute to the fan who did it! Again another impressive gift was a mask of her and ahem, again I only knew it from photos since I was outside the crowd the whole time, mainly because our gifts were already given to Hua earlier today and was already in her car. I gave her a book I bought from Jing Sze (a Buddhist bookshop I really like). I read the English version of the book, The Beauty of Life, and I thought it was a really meaningful and soothing book so I bought a Chinese version for Michelle. Hopefully she enjoys the book as much as I did. Oh, not to forget, she watched our overseas fans videos, and was saying thank you from time to time, to each and every fan who sent their wishes, whether or not the fan was present, she expressed her gratitude from the bottom of her heart. At that point of time, she strikes me as a really down to earth and well mannered girl, she does not act like an actress or someone above us at all, she is very humble and thanks our every little effort with sincere gratitude, she makes sure we know we are appreciated for whatever we have done, she lets us know, she does not think it is expected of us, but when we do something for her, she appreciates it greatly. to be continued...

The ShopThe event ended like almost at 3am. I think anyway, I was so tired for being up for almost 24 hours, although usually this is not a problem if I’m at work, maybe seeing Michelle, I got more hyped that it drained much of my energy than I realized. The next day when San came to collect the room rent, I still under the covers (how embarrassing) and handed her like 400 bucks (I thought it was 100/pax)! Wah, luckily San did not rob me, haha… Then we went to see Michelle filming at the Hong Kong streets again. This scenic spot was much more interesting, it had more types of buildings, Kim and I had a good look around. This trip was definitely made more meaningful visiting Michelle and all the places we visited because of her! If it hadn’t been her, we would’ve missed such an interesting spot. We saw a lot of filming crews, it was really interesting, I had always dreamed to be a director or scriptwriter, too bad in Malaysia the drama and arts industry is not a very popular one. Some claimed they saw Tian Liang, another said Huang Xiao Ming, gosh how we wished we saw them too! Then we finally found Michelle, and watched her filmed. This time, it was a scene of her selling cloths from her family shop. He scene we watched was roughly of Michelle just finished serving a customer and handed him the cloth her purchased. Then another male actor entered the shop to buy cloth from her. Couldn’t hear what they speak though, but Kim and I were speculating that it would be someone else pursuing after her in the film, other than her husband to be! Michelle takes care of her fans very well. She greeted us every free break she had, she even came out especially to allow everyone to crowd with her and take photos, although from behind the crowd I saw how tired she actually is, she stood there and smile gratefully for her fans to take photos, from time to time, being knocked here and there, but there was no single sign of frustration or irritation, only gratitude and willingness to give us more, although fans’ demands are quite impossible to satisfy! After some while, Kim and I left first to get our tickets back to Hangzhou airport tomorrow. to be continued...

The FarewellBasically my journey back ‘home’ took around 24 hours, mostly because I had another connecting flight to my work place right after landing in Malaysia. I have to thank Tong and her friends for taking such good care of us at the airport. Basically, the care and assistance the China staffs have given to overseas fans are very touching for us. From before the trip, to during the entire trip to sending us off at airport, they took excellent care of us, they made us felt home at a foreign land, made us felt like family and not foreigners. Although I know simple verbal thanks is nothing compared to what they’ve all done for us, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all who had directly or indirectly helped us, those who prepared for our transportation, accommodation, food, visits, the event, the performances, etc, etc, the seen and unseen efforts, it will be in our hearts. If any of you guys ever come to Malaysia, just give me a mail (alyrain@gmail.com), I will make sure I’ll be around to show you around, although I’m a lousy tour guide, but I will try to be a good host, I’ve learn much from you. The Golden GirlKnowing Michelle has gained me much unexpected treasures in life, such as valuable friendships, enough-to-survive literacy in Chinese, some knowledge in website programming and construction, internet utilization, and what not. She has perhaps indirectly but still did brought internet to a whole new level of importance to me. Michelle has taught me a lot from the first day I got to know her, from determination, independence to strength in facing challenges, at the point of time when she thanked us respectively while she watched the overseas video, she once again taught me to be humble, and that modesty has no lower limits, it is how much sincerity you’re willing to put into it that limits your modesty. Michelle may not be perfect, she may not be the best (I hope no one throws a shoe at me for saying this), but in fact being perfect is not perfect (to me anyway)! Being just nice is perfect, being just right is perfect, being just human is perfect, Michelle is just nice, just right, just as human as can be, as a woman her age, as a role model for us, as an actress, just entertaining enough for the industry, just perfect enough for us! And this trip is just memorable enough for us… May the day where we will all once again be gathered by this united love for her be sooner than ever! -THE END-

Aww, you guys seemed to have so much fun(except for the getting lost part XD). I sorta now wish I got to go and see Michelle. But then again, if I saw her, I wouldn't know what to say and get tongue-tied, too. So maybe it's a good thing I didn't see her, wouldn't want to embarrass myself.

Rain! I never really properly thanked you for taking such good care of us. I sincerely thank you for always looking out for us and making arrangements for us. I know that could be stressful on your part and we probably ran you nuts at time. Sorry if we did. But I really do appreciate it. Without you, this trip wouldn't have happened. I would not have had the guts to go to China or would never have met Michelle. I may not have had fun 100% of the time, but I don't regret this trip at all. It was an "amazing" and wonderful experience I would never forget...thanks to you. I can't believe that after chatting for 3 years, we actually got to meet each other face to face...and I'm so glad you didn't turn out to be a murderer...lol. I don't know about you, but I didn't sense any awkwardness. It just felt like meeting up with an old friend.
